Tango Anyone?

Woman and man dancing the tango

If you have never attended one of Quadra Island’s Festival of Chamber Music concerts…if you think classical or “highbrow” music is not for you – this is the year for you to give it a try. While most of the week will feature chamber music, the first night’s concert, July 18, is titled “Stop at Nothing: a Night of Tango!” The impassioned and dramatic music of Astor Piazzolla will be accompanied onstage by professional tango dancers from Vancouver.

Piazzolla was born in Argentina in 1921 of Italian parents, an appropriate combination for someone who was inspired by the complexity and emotion of the tango. He moved to New York, where the influence of jazz resulted in his music being labeled “nuevo tango” (new tango).

Each July (in non-COVID years) the Quadra Island Festival of Chamber Music presents a week of music from some of the world’s most famous composers, performed by professional musicians who appear internationally, as well as here in British Columbia. The 2022 program will feature tango, chamber music, some Celtic, and a couple of original pieces. The pleasure and enjoyment of live music is enhanced by the variety of a different venue each evening.

Whether you have been a fan of the chamber music concerts for years or you’re not even sure what chamber music is, don’t miss this rare opportunity to see and hear tango performed at the Quadra Community Centre. The combination of superb musicians and professional dancers will be an exhilarating delight. Come and sway. Olé!

Tickets will go on sale June 1st and for the first time will be available online right here on our website. Any COVID restrictions in place at that time will be enforced.
